| The renovation of this 50 year old example of provincial modernism
realises the potential of the building's location adjacent to an inner
city park, while providing a suitably contemporary setting for the
client's collection of classic and eclectic furnishings.
Large windows and an open plan admit abundant light and establish views
from, into and through the house. The spaces in the house flow together
and join with the front and rear yards and the park beyond. A glazed
corner in the living room overlooking the street, and floor to ceiling
windows on the second floor, extend the interior of the house out into
the park and present the interior to the public as on a stage.
The interior is simply detailed, with white walls and ceilings, a dark
wood floor, and minimal trim set flush to the face of the walls. The
central steel and glass staircase provides interest through fine details
materials, and subtly separates the living and
dining rooms from the kitchen, workroom and back entry. Warmer, more
luxurious textures are found in the granite, wood and tile of the
kitchen, as well as the carefully selected furnishing.
