A unique but difficult
site is the catalyst for the unusual interior arrangement of these
contemporary, loft-style townhouses. The vertical plan development
stems from a desire to retain the site's spectacular exposure and
view, and the need to accomodate a twenty foot grade difference
within the unit footprints.
The living and dining areas lie a full storey below
the street-level entry, with a walkout basement below. A study is
suspended twelve feet above the dining room, with a view south through
twenty two foot high windows over green backyards and alleys. Stairs
wind up the back of the main space from the basement to the main
floor, on to the entry and then up past the study to the two bedroom
levels. Clean, contemporary steel and acrylic railings designed
especially for this building expose those on the stairs to sunlight
and the expansive south view as they move through the house. The
main bedroom, only one floor above the street, is thirty feet above
grade at the rear of the building, and features unparalleled views. |
